Who picks up
Alex Vega owns Vega Construction and is on the job himself — ten years in the trade, based in Barnegat and working the island and the mainland around it.
That is worth knowing before you write, because it tells you what to expect. There is no office and nobody whose job is answering the phone. If you call in the middle of the day you are calling somebody who is probably under a deck or on a ladder — which is why a text with photos often gets you a useful answer sooner than a call does.
It also means the person who answers is the person who will walk your house, write your quote and do the work. You will not be repeating yourself to three people, and a year from now you can call the same number about the same job and reach somebody who remembers it.
Registered as a home improvement contractor with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, and insured. The registration number is at the bottom of this page and you can check it yourself in about thirty seconds.
Three ways to reach us
All of them go to the same person. There is no call centre and no ticket number.
Call
Best when you want to talk something through, or when you are not sure how to describe what is wrong.
Text, with photos
Usually the fastest way to get a useful answer. A small crew is on a job site most of the day, and a photo can be looked at between two things where a call cannot.
Email or the form
Best for anything with detail — a list of work, a plan, or a job you are collecting quotes on. The form at the top of this page reaches the same place.
What to send so the first answer is worth something
Especially if you are not local and cannot walk us around the house.
Most first messages say some version of “how much would it cost to redo my deck”. That is a fair question and it has no honest answer yet, so what comes back is a range so wide it helps nobody.
Three or four photos change that completely. Not staged ones — the plain, badly lit ones you would take to show a friend.
Take one from far enough back to see the whole thing, one close up on whatever is bothering you, and one of the part underneath or behind it if you can get to it. That last one is the one almost nobody sends and the one that tells us the most, because it is where the answer usually is.
Then say what you already know: how old it is, whether it has been worked on before, whether there is a date it has to be finished by. A booking, a closing, family coming in July. Anything with a date on it changes the answer more than the photos do.
With that, you get a real reply instead of a range — often without anyone driving out at all. And when we do come out, we arrive already knowing what we are looking at.
A good first message
- The whole thing, from far enough back
- A close-up of what is bothering you
- Underneath or behind it, if you can get there
- The town the house is in
- Roughly how old the work is
- Any date it has to be done by
What happens after you reach out
Step 1
We answer you
Same language you wrote in. If the photos are enough to tell you something useful straight away, we tell you straight away — including when the honest answer is that it needs to be seen.
Step 2
We come and look
Free, on your schedule. If you are not local, you do not need to be there — we arrange access however works for you and send photos of what we find.
Step 3
Scope and price in writing
Itemised, with what is not included stated plainly, and with what happens if we open something up and find more. You can hold it next to anyone else’s quote.
Step 4
You decide, with no chasing
Take the time you need. We will follow up once. We are not going to call you every week about a deck.

Before you write
Is the estimate really free?
Yes. Coming out, looking at the work and giving you a written scope and price costs nothing, and you are under no obligation afterwards. If photos are enough to answer your question, that is free too.
Should I call or text?
Text if you can send photos with it — that is usually the fastest route to a useful answer, because a small crew is on a job site most of the day and a photo can be looked at between two things.
Call if you would rather talk it through, or if you are not sure how to describe what is wrong. Both reach the same person.
Do I have to be at the house?
No. A lot of the houses out here belong to people who are two or three hours away, or further. We arrange access however works for you and send photos of what we find, so you are not being asked to approve something you cannot see.
Do you take small jobs?
Yes. A door, a room, a section of deck, one bathroom. Not everything has to be a renovation, and a small job done properly is how most of our bigger ones started.
I am collecting quotes. Is that a problem?
Not at all — you should be. Our written scope is itemised specifically so you can hold it next to someone else’s and see where the two differ, which is usually more useful than comparing the two totals.
Are you licensed and insured?
We are registered as a home improvement contractor with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, and insured. Our registration number is at the bottom of this page, which is where New Jersey requires it to be.
You can look it up yourself on the state’s site in about thirty seconds, and we would rather you did — with any contractor, not just us.
¿Hablan español?
Yes. Hablamos español. Call, text or send photos in either language and you will get an answer in the same one.
What our clients say
You are about to write to a number you found on a website. This is what the last people who did that said afterwards.
Straight from our Google profile
Not selected, not edited. These are the reviews on our Google Business Profile, shown here as they were written.
Send the photos
The whole thing, the close-up, and what is underneath. That is usually all it takes to get a real answer instead of a range.
